英語(形容詞節)

関係代名詞や関係副詞が導く形容詞節は前に置かれた名詞(先行詞)を修飾する説明文。


[116]関係代名詞(主語の働きをするもの)
The police still haven't found the person who did it.
Look. The gas station that used to be here is gone.
We live in a society which shares the same culture and values.

[117,118] 関係代名詞(目的語の働きをするもの)
Mother Teresa is the woman (whom) I admire the most.
Pick one color (that) you like.
Unfortunately, we can't publish all the letters we receive.
Luck is something you create using your ability.
The man Meg goes out with is tall, dark and handsome.
This is the same house they lived in in the movie “ET.”

[119] 関係代名詞(所有格の働きをするもの)
I've got a friend whose first name is the same as yours.
The woman whose purse was stolen chased after the thief.
There was an Australian guy there whose name I've forgotten.
He tends to use words whose meanings he is not sure of.

[120,121] 前置詞+関係代名詞
This is the building in which I work. I'm on the seventh floor.
In the pub I ran into an old friend with whom I went to high school.
I'd like to obtain a position in which I can apply my knowledge and skills.
We provide special support for students for whom English is their second language.
There are over 500 international students, most of whom are from Asia.

[122]関係副詞(場所と時を表すもの)
Asakusa is the town where I was born and raised.
This is the area where a major earthquake is most likely to occur.
This is the season when cherry blossoms are beautiful in Japan.
There are times when I feel empty and lonely.
Long time no see! When was the last time that we met?

[123] 関係副詞(理由と方法・様態を表すもの)
There are two main reasons why I quit drinking.
I sold the piano, for the simple reason that I didn't use it.
There are many ways that computers can save us time.
“That's the way he is in the classroom.” “Unbelievable!”
There are many ways in which computers can save us time.
August 15th is the day on which World War II ended.

[124]関係詞の省略
“I graduated from college in 1970.” “That's the year I was born.”
Do you realize this is the third time you have failed?
The reason I called was to see if you had any plans for tomorrow.
Thatで置き換えられる関係詞は基本的に省略可能であるが、省略すると文の構造が崩れる「主語」の関係代名詞だけが省略できない。

[125]関係詞の前にカンマを置く場合(非制限用法)
We employ people who fit our “Customer First” policy.
This is Philip Chan, who I work with.
The earth, which moves around the sun, is called a planet.
I've been in the hospital for five days, which is driving me crazy.
I hate lazy people, which is why I hate myself at times.
カンマのない関係詞節は「先行詞の範囲を狭める」働きをし、他方、カンマのある関係詞節は「先行詞に補足的な情報を付加する働きをする。
